Jones supports Herbert result going to court

Chris Ison

OUTGOING Herbert MP Ewen Jones says he supports the Liberal National Party taking the final vote count to the Court of Disputed Returns.

On Monday Mr Jones conceded defeat in the Townsville seat after Labor's Cathy O'Toole won by 37 votes following a recount.

Mr Jones, who held the seat for six years, said 37 votes was a narrow victory, but it was still a victory.

He also said his party owed it to their supporters to take the matter to the Court of Disputed Returns, given the result was so close, and that it was important they leave "no stone unturned". But he said it was a matter for the party.

Mr Jones said he supported the matter going to the Court of Disputed Returns "as soon as humanly possible".

He said it would have to be referred to the court within 40 days of the return of the writ.
