Johnson's field goal ensures Warriors victory over Titans

THE Warriors have struggled to close out games this year, with three of their six losses coming by four points or less.

It looked like the New Zealand outfit was headed for more heartbreak at Mt Smart Stadium yesterday, before holding on to beat the Titans 25-24.

The Warriors appeared to have the points in the bag when they led 24-6 after a try to Ben Henry in the 58th minute in the wet and cold conditions.

But the Titans refused to lie down, converted tries to Williams Zillman, Jamal Idris (his second) and Anthony Don tying up the scores at 24-all before a final-minute field goal from Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson saved the day.

The hosts had led 10-0 after 14 minutes thanks to some Manu Vatuvei brilliance, scoring out wide before outleaping Don to bat the ball back for Feleti Mateo to score under the posts.

Idris was a constant threat on the right edge and got the visitors back into the contest when he barged over out wide, before tries to Bill Tupou and Johnson extended the margin to 20-6.

It wasn't all good news for the Warriors, however, with fullback Kevin Locke taken off on a stretcher after suffering a lower back injury late in the second half.
