Man 'accidentally' discharged gun into neighbour's yard

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said police had cautioned a 61 year-old man in regards to the incident.

"It is believed the man has accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in a gunshot hitting the garage door of his neighbour, across the road," the spokesman said.

"Nobody sustained any injuries from incident."

Police officers are searching a quiet street in West Mackay and detectives are speaking to residents, after reports of a 'loud noise, that sounded like a gunshot' this afternoon.

A scenes of crime officer was also photographing and examining the area on George Milton St.

A resident, who did not wish to be named, said she had heard a loud bang at around 2.30pm.

"It did sound like a gun shot. I came outside and had a look from my verandah but I couldn't see anything. I went out for a while and when I got in the kids said ' Mum there are cops everywhere outside'. I didn't believe them because we live in a very quiet street," she said.

Another resident said 'It made me jump. It definitely sounded like a gunshot".

Police are currently on the scene.
