Huge festival for Toowoomba Chinese New Year

TOOWOOMBA has long had an annual Chinese New Year event, but this year things are set to change.

Where in the past the event, which marks the beginning of the Chinese lunar new year, has been held in local restaurants and was more focussed on food, this year organisers have gone all out and created a full festival.

Organiser Daphne Fung said there would be a stage set up for a bevy of live performances from a range of groups both local and from further afield.

On top of that there would be a range of food and market stalls as well as activities for the family.

Even seniors would have a special seated area to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Ms Fung said the new format made the event far more family friendly and there was also a greater focus on other countries that celebrate the lunar new year apart from China.

She said it was a special time for the event as China's relationships with Toowoomba were strengthened.

"In 2016, Toowoomba Regional Council entered into a partnership with the Yuecheng District in Zhejiang Province," she said.

"The purpose is to develop a longstanding trade and business relationship, focussing on education, tourism, export and investment."

She said the festival would be a fun way to celebrate those ties.

The event will be held in the Toowoomba Library Precinct come rain, hail or shine on February 25 from 10am-2pm.
