How a dance with death cured patient's flight fears

FOR Toowoomba's Christine Dowton, the thought of getting in a helicopter genuinely seemed worse than dying of a heart attack.

But with the help of RACQ LifeFlight paramedic Anthony Clark, she is now considering her husband's dream trip to Canada.

Because Mrs Dowton lives right near Toowoomba's LifeFlight base, in a highly unusual case it was a LifeFlight paramedic first on the scene when the emergency call came in.

After taking her to Toowoomba Hospital by car, doctors decided the best course of action was to fly her to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital.

But it took an awful lot of coaxing by Mr Clark to get her inside what she saw as a downright deathtrap.

"Anthony made sure I knew exactly what was happening the whole time," Mrs Dowton said.

"He was pressing buttons and explaining the aircraft operations so I was more comfortable."

They were reunited yesterday when Mrs Dowton handed over a $2000 cheque after running a fundraiser.
