History suggests Capitalist might struggle

RACING: Capitalist is set to start the Missile Stakes at Royal Randwick tomorrow as a very short-priced favourite, but recent history suggests the Golden Slipper winner will be up against it this weekend.

The past three Golden Slipper winners have not won a single race after taking out the world's richest two-year-old race and there have been plenty of notable Golden Slipper victors that have failed to kick on as three-year-olds.

The Missile Stakes (Group 2, 1200m) is an interesting placement from Team Snowden as no three-year-old has contested the race since fellow Golden Slipper winner Dance Hero was successful in 2005.

As has become tradition the Missile Stakes has drawn a very small field - and it is a positive for Capitalist that favourites have an excellent record in the race.

Temple Of Boom was upstaged by Burbero last year and Rebel Dane went down to Sweet Idea in 2014, but Rain Affair (2013 and 2011), Pinwheel (2012) and Love Conquers All (2010) all saluted as very short-priced favourites.

Capitalist may not have many rivals in the Missile Stakes, but he will face a couple of seven-year-olds, Generalife and Rebel Dane, good enough to take advantage if there is a chink in the armour of the star colt.

It has been a while between wins for Generalife, but he rarely runs a bad race and Rebel Dane has an excellent first-up record.

Capitalist will be one of the most interesting horses to follow during the Spring Racing Carnival and we are sure to know more about how far he will be able to go after tomorrow's Missile Stakes.

Capitalist will start a short-priced favourite, but Ladbrokes is promising the best odds to punters.

It is offering best tote or starting price plus 20% for both the Missile Stakes at Royal Randwick and the Aurie's Star Handicap at Flemington.
