Hervey Bay declared No.1 whale spot on planet

A POPULAR travel website has named Hervey Bay the number one place on the planet to go whale watching.

Writing of her whale-watching experience for travel2next.com, Christina Pfeiffer said: "There's no doubt in my mind that Hervey Bay is the best place in the world to watch whales."

Bobbie Hayter, manager of the Spirit of Hervey Bay whale watching tours, says she agrees.

"We might be a bit biased, but definitely," she said.

She says the behaviour of the humpback whales when they visit Hervey Bay is what makes the city such a popular destination.

She says while other places offer tours, whale watching in other cities mostly see the behaviour of humpback whales that are busy migrating to their next destination, whereas Hervey Bay is where the whales stop for a while and tourists have unforgettable interactions.

"They come here to rest and play," Ms Hayter said.

She says whales often stay for a few days on their journey back to Antarctica as mothers fattened up their calves to enable their survival in the colder waters.
