Heroin habit puts addict in jail

A HEROIN addict has been jailed for selling more than $2000 worth of the drug.

John Michael Schmid will be behind bars until March next year, after serving six months of his two-year prison term.

Maroochydore District Court heard Schmid, 43, sold about 5g of heroin to another person in April 2015, two months after he was taken to Nambour Hospital in a drug-affected state, with nearly $2000 in his wallet and 14 knotted pieces of plastic containing white power, including heroin.

Defence barrister David Crews said Schmid had been a drug addict since he was a teenager, and suffered from drug-induced schizophrenia.

"At the time of the offending he had stopped taking his medications," Mr Crews said.

He said Schmid used heroin to reduce the voices in his head, but had since been working on kicking his drug addiction.

Judge Douglas McGill said given Schmid's long history of crime prison was the appropriate sentence.

"Hopefully while you're inside you'll be able to get off the drugs, stay of the drugs, and be released on parole," he said.
