Sunshine Coast's "Mr Roads" passes away age 86

THE man responsible for creating the Sunshine Coast we know today has died in a Currimundi nursing home, his achievements for the most part unheralded.

Graham Thurecht was very much this region's Mr Roads, driving key infrastructure projects during a period of growth when money to fund them was tight.

Today's politicians spruik projects that are obvious and needed but can't deliver the money to fund them.

Mr Thurecht as Main Roads District engineer, Gympie, was responsible for not only designing and ultimately overseeing construction of the four-laning of the Bruce Hwy deviation of the railway towns, that highway's by-passing of Nambour and Yandina and the four-lane re-routing of Maroochydore Rd in to the heart of the CBD, but he also helped make the argument for their need.

His role meant he was responsible for an area stretching from South Burnett to Caboolture during the late 1970s and 1980s.

He liaised with local governments on their priorities, designed the infrastructure and helped argue the case to fund them.

"He was a quiet achiever," former Maroochy Shire engineer Noel Ludwig said.

"He would cut the bureaucratic corners and get the job done."

The Sunshine Coast in the late 1970s early 1980s was a developing area supported only by limited government funds.

In retirement Mr Thurecht lived in Caloundra with his sister Daphne who died before him.

Former Maroochy Shire mayor Don Culley said Mr Thurecht had been responsible for providing the region with millions of dollars in desperately needed funding to start highway and road projects we use today.

Mr Thurecht died on May 25 at Ozcare, Currimundi, aged 86.
