Harley Bennell finally to get Dockers debut
FREMANTLE has confirmed that highly talented and strife-prone midfielder/forward Harley Bennell will make his club debut against Richmond this weekend.
Dockers coach Ross Lyon said on Wednesday that Bennell, who has missed almost two full seasons with injury, will wear the Fremantle jumper for the first time at the top level at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.
Bennell, who has had a series of calf injuries and an off-field indiscretion since crossing from Gold Coast at the end of 2015, has played the past four games for Peel in the WAFL.
Bennell had his best game yet for Peel last weekend - moving well and booting two goals - and the Dockers believe he is now ready to play and are hopeful that he will play against the Tigers.
The club is mindful that this is a home game in Perth and that there would be only one further opportunity to select Bennell this year for his long-awaited debut with his second club.
The Dockers have to travel to play Essendon at Etihad Stadium in the final round, which would arguably be more a challenging environment for Bennell to play his first Fremantle game, given his calf history.
Bennell played 81 games for Gold Coast before he put up for trade after a number of off-field issues that saw the Suns lose patience with the extremely talented midfielder.
Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has shown strong faith in Bennell and backed him repeatedly, despite the player's failure to make it back from his calf problems, which saw him travel to Germany to receive treatment.
In further good news for the Dockers, two of their emerging young players have recommitted to the club.
South Australian Brennan Cox has signed a two-year extension, taking his deal until the end of the 2020 season.
Ed Langdon, who was out of contract at season's end, has signed a two-year deal to remain at Freo.
