Groth’s slam run ended by veteran in New York

BIG-serving Sam Groth is the latest Australian to be ousted from the US Open.

The Aussie went down in three sets to Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo, who had also sent Roger Federer and Nick Kyrgios packing from the past two grand slams at Flushing Meadows.

The 26th seed won 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 to leave Bernard Tomic and Lleyton Hewitt fighting this morning to be the final Aussie in the men's draw as they go head to head.

Top seed Novak Djokovic is also through to round three, accounting for Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-4 6-1 6-2.

It was a little tougher for Rafael Nadal, the eighth seed pushed hard in his 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 7-5 victory over Diego Sebastian Schwartzman.

There was good news for defending champion Marin Cilic who had a 6-2 6-3 7-5 win over Evgeny Donskoy.

In the women's draw, Serena Williams carried on her march towards a calendar grand slam with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory over Kiki Bertens in round two.

Sister Venus Williams is also through, seeing off fellow American Irina Falconi 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-2.
