GRINSPOON is coming out of an indefinite hiatus and going on tour with Cold Chisel around the country in November.

The rock band will be touring with Cold Chisel in seven shows in South Australia, Victoria, NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory, including already sold-out shows in the Qantas Credit Union Arena in Sydney.

The band started playing in Lismore at the Gollan Hotel in 1995 and went to become an international success, winning the Aria award for Best Rock album in 2005 for Thrills, Kills & Sunday Pills.

The band announced its hiatus in February 2008 but performed the following year at Splendour in the Grass in Byron Bay.

Guitarist Pat Davern confirmed the band was getting ready to start rehearsing for the tour.

"Cold Chisel approached us six months ago knowing that they were gonna go out on this tour and they offered us a couple of regional shows, which we politely declined," Davern said.

"Somewhere in between then and now everything changed," he said.

"They realised that they needed us to go on tour with them because we are awesome and it will make it such a great show.

"We start rehearsals for the tour on October 19."

Davern said the band was excited about going on tour with Cold Chisel again.

"We have played with them a couple of times before over the years and it has always been a good match," he said.

Grinspoon's last live gig was in December 2013 and although it had not disbanded, Davern, was surprised to get confirmation of the gigs. "We just decided that we've had enough for a while," he said.

"We had been on the road around 18 times in 20 years so we thought it was time to give it a rest and go and do some other things."

The musician lives in Bangalow with his partner Katya Shiel.

He owns The Music Shop in Bangalow, and is also preparing a children's book and music album to be launched via Universal Music and the ABC in November.
