THOUSANDS of people have poured through the gates of a festival in Stanthorpe to experience snow in Queensland.

Snowflakes in Stanthorpe is designed to be Queensland's only winter experience.

Organisers had been expecting 5000 visitors but early estimates have the number of guests at 8000.

Committee member Nicola Holly said a man-made snowfield at the event was popular, especially with children.

"The ice skating is also going off," she said.

Tonight a bonfire will be lit and stunt group Walter Whip and The Flames will perform.

Tomorrow a recovery breakfast will be held at Quart Pot Creek followed by markets.
