Gower will return from Super League to play for Knights

FORMER Penrith and Australian halfback Craig Gower is set to join the Newcastle Knights after being given a release from the London Broncos.

The 35-year-old, who also played club rugby in France and represented Italy in the 15-man game, had 18 months to run on his English Super League contract.

London Broncos chief executive Gus Mackay paid tribute to Gower who played 45 appearances for the club and scored 82 points.

"We'd like to thank Craig for his time in London with the Broncos. He was an exemplary trainer and always gave 100% on the pitch," Mackay said.

Earlier this week the Knights confirmed they were in discussions with Gower's management about him joining the club.

It is believed he has agreed to a short-term deal with Newcastle to provide cover for injured utility Kurt Gidley (foot) and hooker Danny Buderus (back).

Gidley is expected to be out of action for up to six weeks with a partially torn lisfranc ligament, the main supporting ligament of the foot.

Buderus last played against the Raiders in round four after suffering a recurrence of a bulging disc.
