Switched on students write and illustrate book in 12 hours

GIVEN only 12 hours to write and illustrate a 4000-word book, 60 students at Aldridge State High School have taken part in a competition to create new novels for sick children at Brisbane's Royal Children's Hospital.

Over the month, groups of 10 have taken up the challenge from the Katherine Susannah Prichard Foundation's Write-a-Book-in-a-Day competition, with the latest group sending off their novel on Friday.

Teams were given a random setting, a list of characters, a theme and five words to prompt the story at 8am and had to complete the edited and illustrated novel by 8pm on the same day.

Year 10 student Danica Butler helped to illustrate the book A Ghost in the Bathroom, the first book of six to be created by Aldridge students. The group had to include a jester and a vampire in the story and include an apartment block as a setting.

Her group was still editing and illustrating up to half an hour before filing their novel, but Danica said she would do it all over again.

"We were right down to the eight o'clock deadline," she said.

"It was a great experience."

Fellow student Emily Brain said each writer was given two chapters to complete during the 12 hours, with the team spending about an hour-and-a-half to plan the plot.

"That was the hardest part, coming up with an idea," she said.

"We were given really unusual characters."

Emily said she recommended other school students or groups take part in the challenge.

The books submitted to the challenge will be judged for best story later this year.
