Racing mower crashes into spectators

Girl taken to hospital after being hit by racing lawnmower

UPDATE: THE nine-year-old girl injured while watching Friday's lawnmower race at the Fraser Coast Show is expected to be released from hospital later on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's lawnmower races were cancelled out of respect for the girl and her family.

Show socety president Gary Jensen said the freak accident was unexpected.

"Where he hit was a gate," he said.

"It's just an unfortunate accident."

Mr Jensen said safety was paramout.

"Twice we inspected the track before the race with the lawnmower association," he said.

"We thought we had it covered."

To increase safety organisers have moved the V8 ute demonstration further away from spectators in the main arena.

EARLIER: A YOUNG girl was injured on Friday afternoon after a lawnmower speared through the fence at the Fraser Coast Show.

It is believed the girl, believed to be nine years old, was a spectator when the lawnmower lost control.

Show society president Gary Jensen said the driver's steering broke "and he just speared off into the crowd".

"A young girl has suspected fractured legs. (The driver) has some cuts to his face," he said.

Mr Jensen said the racing's future was uncertain.

"It's very unfortunate and I'm not sure what it means for the lawnmower racing for the rest of the show."

Spectator Lewis Dodimead captured the crash on video.
