German opal bandit arrested in Bay has escaped in Thailand

THE German opal bandit who was arrested in Hervey Bay is at large in Thailand after escaping from an Australian security escort at an airport in Bangkok.

Carlo Konstantin Kohl, 25, was being transported back to Germany to face outstanding charges in his home country earlier this month, when he somehow managed to evade the security guards contracted by the Immigration Department during a delayed stopover in Bangkok.

Thai newspapers the Bangkok Post and Phuket News reported the security guards fell asleep on the job, but this was denied by the Immigration Department.

A representative from the department confirmed that Kohl was still at large at the time of publication.

Kohl was arrested by Hervey Bay CIB detectives in 2010 and was jailed for nine years by the Brisbane Supreme Court in September, 2012.

Kohl made ecstasy and marijuana drop-offs up for a River Heads man for a 20% commission between 2007 and 2009.

He was running up to 1000 ecstasy tablets a week worth about $25,000 including regular weekly drop-offs to Rainbow Beach.

Kohl was also found guilty of bringing $165,000 worth of opals into Queensland which another man had stolen from a business in Coober Pedy in South Australia.

After spending 883 days in pre-sentence custody, Kohl was eligible for parole in January.

After receiving parole, he was being transported back to Germany on May 16.

Thai police are believed to have offered a 10,000 Thai baht ($347) reward for his capture.
