Gastric bug forces Stingers into isolation

WATER POLO: With four of its members still feeling the effects of gastroenteritis, the entire Australian women's Olympic water polo team has been put in isolation away from the Olympic Village in Rio.

The Stingers flew into Rio yesterday from their training base in Rome, where the players were struck by a 12-hour gastric bug.

They had returned to training before their flight, but Australia's Olympic team chief Kitty Chiller was taking no chances of infection spreading.

"We have decided to move them into the alternate accommodation that we were in before moving into the village and we will keep them in isolation,” she said.

"Just the usual precautionary measures, but there will be no interaction between anyone in the village and them for the next 48 hours, until they are cleared by the team doctor.”

Ranked No.3 in the world, the Stingers have their first match against Russia next Tuesday.

Australia won gold in the women's water polo at the 2000 Sydney Games and bronze at Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.
