Fyfe in strife as Kangas overcome ladder leaders

BROWNLOW Medal favourite Nat Fyfe was reported as Fremantle suffered an 11-point loss to North Melbourne in a dramatic contest at Etihad Stadium.

Fyfe's name went into the umpire's book after he made high, front-on contact with Kangaroos stopper Ben Jacobs in the third quarter, the Roos going on to win the match 14.10 (94) to 12.11 (83).

North Melbourne players remonstrated strongly with Fyfe (pictured) after the incident, which could see him miss out on a second Brownlow Medal. The AFL changed the rules after last season when Fyfe was ineligible following two reports, missing games on each occasion.

Under the new rules, he had still been eligible to win the award this season after twice accepting fines for low-level charges. A third charge, however minor, would see him handed an automatic suspension and again ruled ineligible to win the game's highest individual honour. The victory lifted North Melbourne to 52 points, eight clear of ninth-placed Geelong, with games to come against the Western Bulldogs and Richmond.

In a match that saw him move to No.2 on the all-time list of games played (404), 37-year-old Brent Harvey was a star for North with 17 possessions and four goals.

The Dockers were without captain Matthew Pavlich (Achilles), and after a brilliant seven-goal opening term, struggled for targets up forward and managed just five more for the match.

North ruckman Todd Goldstein had a great battle with opposite number Aaron Sandilands, Goldstein finishing with 15 disposals, 28 hit-outs and two goals, and Sandilands responding with 14 disposals, 43 hit-outs and two goals of his own.
