Grid Cluster to change future of energy sector
A NEW $13 million national research effort will develop Australia's ability to design the most efficient, low emission power grid possible.
Led by the CSIRO, the initiative will include four top universities to help the electricity sector towards low-emission renewable energy.
CSIRO energy group executive Dr Tom Hatton said the Future Grid Cluster would lead the way for the next 20 to 30 years of change for the energy sector.
"We're talking about change to a system that has seen stability for decades and has used technologies and energy sources that are predictable and controllable.
"Moving away from that is going to require a great deal of effort and capacity building," Dr Hatton said.
The initiative will look at the engineering, economic and policy aspects of developing a lower emission electricity grid that is less reliant on fuel sources such as coal.
