Fraser Coast Mariners ready for Bushrangers' challenge

TRENT Devere believes today's Sunshine Coast Rugby Union reserve grade game is a glimpse to the future.

The Fraser Coast Mariners will host Maleny Bushrangers for the first time since the Sunshine Coast club returned to the competition.

Devere and his Mariners teammates had a close look at Maleny when the teams played at the Sunshine Coast in the first round.

"We're reasonably even side,” Devere said. "As long as we improve from our last game I'll be happy.”

Nambour Toads thumped the Mariners 47-7 in their last game two weeks ago, but Devere said he rated their attack as better than when they towelled Gympie Hammers 50-19.

Devere, buoyed by his side's best training session of the year, said he expected his troops to be ready for what Maleny had to offer.

His side will be boosted by the return of several representative players.

Wide Bay Whales were due to face Central Highlands in Hervey Bay, but the CQ side forfeited due to their lack of numbers.

The Mariners-Maleny game kicks off at 3pm.
