Forget the rest Inglis simply the best

HOW good is Greg Inglis?

Don't tell the King, but Willie Carne says the Maroons legend breathes the most rarefied air - the best there is or ever has been.

Coast-based Carne, the retired Australia, Queensland and Broncos star, considers the Maroons centre a freakish hybrid of Cameron Smith, Darren Lockyer and Petero Civoniceva.

Good enough, he said, to be named an Immortal before he retired - an honour given to no other.

It is the Rabbitohs wrecking ball's ongoing presence in Queensland's Origin side - combined with the continued added thrust of captain Smith, five-eighth Johnathan Thurston and fullback Billy Slater - that has Carne predicting another win for the Maroons.

"He's an amazing athlete, that guy," said the Roma-born winger, who played 12 matches for Queensland between 1990-96.

"He's like Billy Slater, Cameron Smith and Darren Lockyer all put into one, with the size and attitude of Petero Civoniceva.

"I always thought Andrew Johns was probably the best.

"Wally Lewis. I remember playing with him as a kid. He was probably the greatest I played with. (But) if you had to pick a grant final team, who would be your No.1 choice? Greg Inglis."

Against the Blues in game one at Sydney's ANZ Stadium on Wednesday night, his 19th Origin match, Inglis will look to improve on his record 14 tries.

Incumbent Maroons and Test fullback Billy Slater is third on the list with 11 tries from 19 matches.

Inglis is the game's form No.1, but will again play centre for Queensland.

Although Carne rated Inglis a better player than Slater - but only because Slater was decidedly smaller - he would keep the Storm superstar at fullback.

Carne warned that new Blues coach Laurie Daley would be very effective.
