Time ticking for accused killer as trial date looms

A MAGISTRATE has set a deadline for an accused murderer's legal team to determine whether or not they wish to cross-examine witnesses as part of a court committal proceeding.

Former Ipswich man Alex Reuben McEwan is accused of murdering South Korean student Eunji Ban, 22, during the early hours of November 24, 2013 in Brisbane's Wickham Park.

Mr McEwan's case was briefly mentioned at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday when his case was adjourned until next month.

The court heard his legal team had had difficulty obtaining instructions from Mr McEwan who is behind bars at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre.

But the prosecutor said the defence had been seeking instructions for about five months now and said the matter should progress.

Mr McEwan had been held in jail on remand for two and a half years, the court heard.

Mr McEwan's legal team has been ordered to inform the prosecution by August 8 whether the defence team intends to cross-examine witnesses in the committal proceedings.

His case was adjourned to be mentioned again at Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 22.

Mr McEwan was remanded in custody. - ARM NEWSDESK
