Stanthorpe man charged with drug offences released from jail

A STANTHORPE man who was found with drugs in his urine has been released from prison.

Reece William Luscombe was arrested and charged in May for drug offences which allegedly occurred in March last year.

The Supreme Court heard on Thursday that drugs were allegedly found in his urine when he was arrested.

At the time he was on bail for other offences, including possessing meth, and it was a condition of bail that he stayed off drugs. He has been in jail since he tested positive in May.

But Mr Luscombe's lawyer Alastair McDougal argued his client could be behind bars for two years waiting for the case to make its way through the court system.

He also said it was a possibility Mr Luscombe would fight the charges.

But prosecutor William Slack said Mr Luscombe had breached bail twice; he tested positive for drugs and also did not engage with an alcohol service, which was another condition.

Justice David Jackson said he was satisfied strict conditions could be imposed to ensure Mr Luscombe would not re-offend.

Justice Jackson noted Mr Luscombe had previously complied with bail conditions before because he returned two clean urine tests last year.

Mr Luscombe will have to be at home between 7pm and 4am every day and engage with a drug service.

Mr Luscombe will face court again over allegedly possessing 0.2g of meth and 1.8g of pseudoephedrine and other drug charges later this month.

Police are still preparing the case against him for other alleged drug offences.
