Fly from Maroochydore to Singapore for $149?

SCOOT Airlines, part of the world's biggest low-cost airline alliance, is eyeing the Sunshine Coast as its next destination for cheap flights to Asia.

Scoot general manager Dennis Basham is in Noosa and has been discussing the potential of direct flights from the Sunshine Coast once the new runway is completed in 2020.

Scoot is Singapore Airlines low cost carrier and was awarded the best budget airline in 2015.

If Scoot adds the Sunshine Coast to its list of 11 existing Australian airport, it will open up cheap flights to Singapore, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Vietnam and the Maldives.

Visit Sunshine Coast acting CEO Simon Latchford said buyers from "all over the world were really keen to try a different product".

"I've just walked out of meeting with Dennis Basham. He stood in front of people and said this was one of the reasons why 'the Sunshine Coast is so important to us.

"He said that's why we are keen to start building growth so once we get the new airport (and extension) in place, we can have airlines such as Scoot and Singapore Airlines start doing direct services.

"It is fabulous an international airline is prepared to stand up on the Sunshine Coast and say 'we are keen to start partnering with you to develop the Sunshine Coast'."

Mr Basham told the Daily Scoot had started talks with Visit Sunshine Coast and the Sunshine Coast Airport about the work that needed to be done so that by the time the new runway was built in 2020, "we will have enough demand".

"If the opportunity arose, Scoot would be willing to look at a proposal," Mr Basham said.

"There is a lot of work to be done in the next two years to build enough demand.

"We are approached by various airports all the time, we are very lucky in this region the airport and tourism body work closely, which we don't always see.

"Our team is ready to review any proposal. It's part of me being up here.

"The Singapore market love Queensland. We have been flying into the Gold Coast for four years. We are getting feedback we need to get looking for something else."

Scoot planes would need a new runway to fly into the Coast.

"Our Scoot 787-900 is too big for the current runway," Mr Basham said.
