First ever female Chief Justice appointed in Queensland

QUEENSLAND Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced the state's new Chief Justice after the role stood vacant for more than two months following Tim Carmody's resignation.

Justice Catherine Holmes will become Queensland's 19th Chief Justice.

Ms Palaszczuk said the Supreme Court had faced some tough times in the past year and needed a fresh start.

"Justice Holmes is a terrific legal mind who has extensive experience as a judge across criminal, civil and appellate jurisdictions," she said.

"I am confident she will bring stability, integrity and provide vital leadership during her tenure as the next Chief Justice of Queensland."

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said Justice Holmes was widely respected among the legal fraternity.

She said the government had consulted widely about the appointment.

"We were spoilt for choice," she said.

"Justice Holmes has the personal and professional qualities to be an excellent Chief Justice."

Queensland Law Society president Michael Fitzgerald said the organisation looked forward to working with Chief Justice Holmes.

"We look forward to working with the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Holmes, in maintaining and preserving the rule of law and access to justice across the state," he said.

"Queensland Law Society has always maintained that the position of Chief Justice is of central importance to the community as the leader of the Supreme Court, the judiciary and the profession."

Justice Holmes was admitted as a barrister to the Queensland Supreme Court in 1984 and initially worked as a Commonwealth Crown prosecutor.

She took silk (was appointed Senior Counsel) in 1999 and was appointed to the bench in 2000.

Justice Holmes received widespread praise after heading up the Commission of Inquiry into the deadly 2010-11 Queensland floods.

It is understood she will take up her position this month.
