TAFE works with police to catch arsonist

UPDATE: Tania Williams, Leader, Community and Business Engagement for the Clarence Valley has said the fire at Grafton TAFE caused minimal damage.

"The damage was contained to a bin and some minor damage to some paint work, from our point of view we are working the police who are investigating the incident," Ms Williams said.

"We are very grateful for emergency services quick response that did contain any damage."

10.30PM:  Inspector Gorman from Coffs Harbour Police Station confirmed that the fire was deliberately lit.

"Caused minor damage to the building adjacent to it... and further investigation found another bin with fire damage," he said.

The arsonist ignited a yellow wheelie bin filled with combustible material near B Block.

Inspector Gorman urged anyone with information to contact crime stoppers or police.

Grafton Fire Captaion Garry Reardon reminded people that they should keep wheelie bins separate to buildings.

"Timely reminder to not have wheelie bins with combustible materials located in close proximity to building - that's what is commonly targeted. People light up industrial bins located close to buildings," he said.

He added that bins should be secured or separate to buildings where ever possible.

Both Grafton and South Grafton Fire Brigades attended the scene.

9AM: An arson attack has sparked an emergency situation at an educational facility in Grafton this morning.

Police and the fire services rushed to the Grafton TAFE about 5.40pm after the automatic alarm system was triggered.

Grafton Fire Brigade Captain Garry Reardon said firefighters had identified flames coming from the first floor of B Block.

"They responded to that area with breathing apparatus and extinguished fires in three locations.

"It had been deliberately lit," Mr Reardon said.
