Federal budget funds for more regional Jobs and Skills Expos

ANOTHER 10 Jobs and Skills Expos will be funded and more people encouraged to move to regional areas for work next fiscal year, as part of a $19.2 million budget package.

Tuesday's budget showed the Federal Government would put $15.7 million to the expos and hiring local employment coordinators in "priority employment areas" and $3.5 million to help people move for work before June 30, 2014.

Employment Minister Bill Shorten said the initiatives would help to ensure rural and regional businesses can attract the skilled workers they need.

"Added to the challenges of remoteness, our regional businesses also have to adapt to the new competitive environment of the Asian Century," he said.

"This is further exacerbating skills shortages which businesses in rural and regional Australia have always had to deal with."

Funded in last year's budget, there are two jobs expos also coming up in Bundaberg and Ipswich in the next month.

Upcoming Jobs Expos:

  • Bundaberg: Thursday May 23; Bundaberg Civic Centre, 190 Bourbong St.
  • Ipswich: Friday June 14; Ipswich Showgrounds Pavilion, Cnr Salisbury and Warwick Roads.

Both expos run from 10am to 3pm.
