Facebook launches emotions buttons to give right response

Today we’re launching a pilot test of Reactions — a more expressive Like button. As you can see, it’s not a “dislike” button, though we hope it addresses the spirit of this request more broadly. We studied which comments and reactions are most commonly and universally expressed across Facebook, then worked to design an experience around them that was elegant and fun. Starting today Ireland and Spain can start loving, wow-ing, or expressing sympathy to posts on Facebook by hovering or long-pressing the Like button wherever they see it. We’ll use the feedback from this to improve the feature and hope to roll it out to everyone soon.

IF YOU have ever sat, at a loss, staring at a friends forlorn status and you just want to show your empathy but 'like' does not seem to be the right thing to press, Facebook may just have the answer for you. 

The social media superpower is getting ready to run a trial of six new emoji reactions which will show up on user's timelines and news feeds on desktop, mobile or tablet versions. 

The six new emotions include; 

Love: For when 'liking' something just does not seem enough. You don't like it, you love it. 

Haha: For when your friend has said something funny enough to get you laughing out loud.

Yay: For when a post fills you with so much excitement and joy that you need to express yourself.  

Wow: For when your friend's post has shocked you. Unbelievable. 

Sad: For when you want to show compassion with your sad friends. This is the real empathy button. 

Angry: For when you want to show your friends that you are as mad as they are. You are mad as hell and you aren't going to take this anymore.

Facebook's head of News Feed Chad Mosseri told Bloomberg that the social media site had avoided using a 'dislike' button because it would promote negativity. 

"We wanted to make it easier," he said. "When things are easier to do, they reach more people, and more people engage with them." 

Mosseri said a dislike option would not be "in the spirit of the product we are trying to build." 

The new emotion reaction remain in testing phase as they are unleashed on Facebook users in Ireland and Spain. 

The range of emotion buttons had to be fitting for the global product. They had to appeal to people of several different cultures and languages across the world.

Mr Mosseri remains that the buttons are merely in testing phase. 

"We really have learned over the years that you don't know what is going to work until it is out there, until people are using it."
