Ex-Chronicle scribe takes on TV role poking fun at history

STILL dressed in their pyjamas, Maryborough's Matthew Backer and friends popped a bottle of champagne at breakfast, as his face lit up the television screen for the first time.

The former Chronicle journalist and Sydney best friend Paige Gardiner have scored hosting roles on quirky new kids program History Hunters.

The pair grew close while studying at the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Arts and auditioned for the show together last year.

With 12 episodes now in the bag, the friends hope the program, which focuses on a different era each day, will be a big hit with kids in Australia and overseas.

"It's educational and informative but there's still a good amount of silliness infused into it," Matthew said.

"We are so lucky that we've already worked together and both have a love for comedy - we love it."

Since heading to Sydney to pursue his acting dream six-years ago, Matthew has landed a string of hotly contested theatre roles.

Most recently, he starred alongside veteran Aussie actors John Wood and Heather Mitchell in a season of the History Boys at the Sydney Opera House.

Last week he enjoyed a well-earned break back to the Fraser Coast where he celebrated his birthday with family and friends.

History Hunters airs on 7Two, weekdays from 7.30-8am.

It's also set to hit Canadian screens.
