Drug smuggler sentence shows VLAD laws work: Bleijie

FORMER Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie celebrated the first person convicted under the LNP's VLAD legislation with an attack on Labor's "flip-flopping" position on the legislation.

Joshua Robin Rohl was convicted on Wednesday for his role in smuggling $16 million worth of cannabis on commercial flights between Melbourne and Brisbane.

In the Brisbane Supreme Court Rohl, 31, was sentenced to five years in prison, suspended after 18 months.  The Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Act is a sentencing tool that adds 15 years to the sentence of those convicted of being part of organised crime, or in a gang, with an extra 25 years added to someone found to have been an office bearer.

Rohl, while not a member of a bikie gang, was found to be part of organised crime.

His co-operation with police was enough to have the additional sentence dropped.
