Driver beaten in middle of highway

A VIOLENT brawl has broken out in the middle of a busy highway, with footage emerging of a driver being kicked and punched after an alleged tailgating incident.

The nasty road rage episode unfolded on a highway in Melbourne's southeast in front of shocked motorists, one of whom told 7 News it was lucky no one was killed.

Video captured by passing drivers shows a man pinned down in the road while two other men rain down blows on him.

A woman in a pink top, who was travelling with the victim, gets out of her car screaming and tries to stop the fight.

But even as she pleads for help, one of the men takes several flying kicks at the prostrate driver, stomping on his chest.

The men are then separated as others join in with the woman's remonstrances.

Witness Matthew Dylan told 7 News the "unbelievable" attack took place on Sunday morning after the victim tailgated the other men in heavy traffic.

The cars then stopped in the left lane and drivers and passengers got out for the confrontation as passing motorists stared in horror.

"They all just jumped out and started to brawl," he said.

Victoria Police said the episode had not been reported.
