Dean lands his dream job with mining giant
UNIVERSITY of Southern Queensland (USQ) Springfield student Dean Bussian has landed his dream job with the world's largest mining company.
The accounting student from Plainland secured employment with BHP Billiton after completing a three-month graduate program.
Mr Bussian, who is in his final year of study, will start full-time with BHP at the beginning of next year working in the supply-chain area.
"I didn't think I would get it when I first applied for the role, and even when I was going through the application process," he said.
"I'm still pinching myself.
"To work for BHP is such a huge opportunity for me and something I'm excited about and can't wait to start.
"I could never have imagined myself in a position I am in now.
"It's like all the hard work I have put into my uni studies has finally paid off."
Mr Bussian said the extensive experience and necessary knowledge he had learnt during his four years at USQ would put him in good stead to grow his professional development skills at BHP.
It was his involvement in extra-curricular activities, especially with Enactus USQ, which helped him demonstrate the initiative, leadership and teamwork skills BHP was looking for.
"Grades got me through the door, but you have to find a way to set yourself apart from others when applying for a job," Mr Bussian said.
"Getting involved in university life and extra-curricular activities that included a lot of community-based projects was something that I found stood out to BHP and would apply to other organisations as well."
