Coulthard cleared to celebrate V8 Supercar win at Austin
IT was a nervous wait, but Fabian Coulthard was finally able to celebrate his win in race three of the V8 Supercars round in Austin, Texas, yesterday.
Coulthard had been under investigation after appearing to illegally break away from the pack while the safety car was still on the track.
While that was proven, it also emerged that Red Bull Racing drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes had done the same thing.
The upshot was that the finishing positions were retained, but the trio were each docked 30 championship points.
Coulthard admitted the error, blaming a radio problem between him and his Brad Jones Racing team.
"I admit that I did pull away. I heard 'green flag' over the radio, and then 'no, no, no'. I did the best I could - I tried to make it bunched up again to make it fair," he said.
"It was a radio communication problem within our team."
The penalties meant Whincup, who won the other three races on the weekend, retained his series lead on 1217 points, ahead of Lowndes (1075), Will Davison (1029), Coulthard (954) and Jason Bright (945).
The next round is in Darwin from June 14-16.
