'It would be all over for Tony Abbott' say worried MPs

THE south-eastern side of Perth -- a single electorate heading to a by-election next month -- could spell the end of Tony Abbott's time as Prime Minister, according to increasingly worried Liberal MPs.

The seat of Canning was left vacant following the death of Liberal MP Don Randall.

The September 19 poll will come as the Abbott Government struggled to pull itself from a political bog caused by Bronwyn Bishop's entitlements scandal, its opposition to same-sex marriage and most recently, the apparent bias of Dyson Heydon, who chairs the Royal Commission into Union Corruption.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Canberra Times is reporting that several Liberal MPs including "one senior government MP" are fed-up with the Coalition's leadership team appearing to be missing in action while minor hiccups spiral into full-blown scandals.

Along with the Prime Minister, Treasurer Joe Hockey, Employment Minster Eric Abetz and Attorney-General George Brandis were each targeted for criticism.

"We turned Bronwyn [Bishop] into a huge saga, now Dyson Heydon is going to be a huge saga .

"There is no way he [Heydon] can survive but he has to cut himself loose."

"A loss in Canning and it's all over for him [Mr Abbott]."

The latest Newspoll figures suggest the Liberals need to brace for voters for a 10% swing away from the Coalition, a potential disaster for the government.

Meanwhile Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told ABC this morning that by-election results often swing against the government.

He said he had faith in Canning candidate Andrew Hastie and in Mr Abbott.

"I think Tony Abbott will retain the prime ministership and lead us to victory at the next election."

Meanwhile, Sydney Morning Herald has created photographs noting the MPs who would have lost their seats if an election was held on Saturday, based on a Fairfax-Ipsos poll out this week.
