Settlement reached: Burns survivor's backyard fire suit

A TOOWOOMBA woman who as a teenager suffered third-degree burns to 42 per cent of her body after an accelerant was thrown on a fire at a Harristown party in 2013 has settled a civil law suit for damages out of court.

Paris Turkington was 16 when she and another teen, Matthew Richards, were burned in the incident in August, 2013.

Ms Turkington had filed a damages claim against the party host's home and contents insurance in July last year for $11.8 million in damages.

Supreme Court records show the suit was settled out of court.

The claim filed in the Supreme Court revealed Ms Turkington still wore a pressure suit two years after the fire in the backyard of the Harristown home in August, 2013.

A teenage boy, 15, was charged and sentenced in relation to the matter and in 2015 pleaded guilty to two counts of a negligent act causing bodily harm.

Children's Court of Queensland Judge Ian Dearden ordered no conviction be recorded against the teen.

The teen was later added to the civil suit filed by Maurice Blackburn lawyers acting for Ms Turkington.

Records show the matter went into mediation last month and a "Notice of Discontinuance" was filed on November 15.

Parties are believed to have reached a confidential settlement.

Records suggest Mr Richards, who was injured in the same incident and filed a suit seeking $6 million, is progressing.

Mr Richards in August last year told The Chronicle he had dreamed of being a physiotherapist but after he was burned in the party fire aged 15, he had to reconsider his aspirations.

He was seeking past and future damages against the host mother's home and contents insurance provider for more than $6.47 million.
