Company fined for illegally importing Korean beef into Qld

IT HAS taken two years, but a company has been hit with a $10,000 fine after bringing Korean beef into the Gold Coast illegally.

Hyun Woo Trading was caught by the Federal Department of Agriculture as part of its Operation Hayride offensive.

Its director Dong Hee Lee was sentenced on April 4 to nine months in prison, wholly suspended.

The operation uncovered a total of 130 tonnes of illegal food imported from Korea.

On Wednesday, DAFF first assistant secretary Tim Chapman said both companies and individuals were facing punishment for illegally importing goods.

"Australia is free from many pests and diseases that other countries grapple with," he said.

"Bringing prohibited food products into the country and spreading those goods around could threaten Australia with diseases like foot and mouth disease."
