Coast in grips of summer virus outbreak

THE Sunshine Coast is in the grips of a summer influenza outbreak with a spate of cases presenting to hospitals this year.

More than 20 people a week over the past fortnight have been struck down.

There were 23 cases reported last week and 22 the week before, with 122 cases so far this year.

At the same time last year there 145 cases of influenza recorded.

By the end of 2017, there were 4297 reported cases in what was considered a horror flu season.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman said health authorities were working hard to prevent a repeat of last year's flu season.

More than $2.3 million has been invested in protecting communities from influenza.

The Sunshine Coast is not the only region impacted by a flu outbreak with more than 300 cases reported in parts of Brisbane and the Gold Coast this year.
