Claims of ‘bullying tactics’ at Aurizon Rockhampton rejected

AURIZON refuses to respond to claims from some of its Rockhampton employees that they've been gagged from talking to the media about workplace issues.

Last week, The Morning Bulletin fielded calls and text messages from current and former employees from Aurizon's Rockhampton workshop claiming that some managers were bullying workers.

One former maintenance employee, who wished not to be named, claimed he believed his former boss was trying to oust him from his job because the company was pressuring people out of its Rockhampton workforce.

In one text message to the Bulletin SMS editor, another employee stated: "staff were encouraged not to talk to the media... that included emails and text messages about workplace issues. Seems like a raw nerve has been exposed about treatment to workers from certain managers."

An Aurizon spokesman said as a matter of policy, the company would not respond to matters involving individual employees.

"Management is accountable for providing a safe workplace and will ensure matters are dealt with appropriately when the issues are raised with them," he said.

"Safety is the top priority for Aurizon and the company is absolutely committed to responding to any matters raised by employees."

The spokesman further said Aurizon was committed to increasing its Rockhampton workforce because the city had the largest maintenance facility in the region.

There are about 250 employees at the workshop, a number Aurizon said had been consistent for a number of years.

The company announced plans to axe 480 jobs and close Redbank and Townsville maintenance depots to bolster its Rockhampton workforce.
