Choice takes aim at credit card surcharges
NEARLY half of Australians who paid a credit card surcharge in the past three months were not made aware of an alternative a consumer advocate group says.
A Choice survey also found 44% of respondents who used their credit card in the past three months reported paying a surcharge.
The advocate is running a campaign against excessive surcharges, calling for fees to be limited in line with Reserve Bank recommendations.
Choice chief executive Alan Kirkland said it was 72 days since new RBA rules on surcharges came into effect, but major airlines have continued high charges on flights.
"We urgently need strong enforcement and policing of the surcharging rules, beyond what Visa and MasterCard can bring to bear through their commercial dealings," he said.
