Newspaper warns Beijing prepare for military confrontation

CHINESE state-run newspaper The Global Times has published an editorial calling on Beijing to prepare for military confrontation in the South China Sea.

It comes ahead of a July 12 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Netherlands on challenges to China's claims in the disputed sea.

Beijing says it will not respect the court's ruling.

The editorial accused the US of "flexing its muscles" around the South China Sea.

"It awaits China's obedience," it said, adding China should speed up the development of its military deterrence to give the US "a bloody nose" if it intervened in the dispute by force.
