Former Lismore teacher's child sex charges top 50 mark

DETECTIVES have now laid more than 50 child sex related charges against former St John's Woodlawn teacher James Sampson Doran.

Now in his 80s, Doran was excused from appearing at Lismore District Court yesterday but was represented by his solicitor Craig Pratt.

The former lay teacher, who was arrested last September at his Kingscliff home by detectives from Strike Force Golvo, was initially charged with 19 offences against at least 10 male students between 1978 and 1986.

Since his first court appearance, investigations by Strike Force Golvo detectives have resulted in an additional 34 charges being laid after more alleged victims came forward.

Doran now faces 53 charges related to the alleged abuse of former students.

Charges Doran faces include eight counts of sexual assault knowing no consent was given, eight counts of sexual assault and commit an act of indecency and six counts of homosexual intercourse between a teacher and a pupil aged older than 10 but less than 18.

After Doran left St John's Woodlawn he was principal at St Teresa's College in Abergowrie, far north Queensland from 1989 to 1993.

He also worked as lay principal of Holy Trinity School at Inverell from 1979 to 1980.

The offences are alleged to have been committed in NSW and Queensland.

Locations of the alleged offences include Lismore, Woodlawn, Bexhill, Blakebrook, Armidale, Inverell, Bourke, Prospect, Potts Point, Surfers Paradise, Brisbane and Toowong.

Police charges tendered before the court allege Doran exposed his penis to students, masturbated in front of them, kissed and inappropriately touched students and had unconsensual sexual intercourse with students.

Mr Pratt previously waived Doran's right to a committal hearing in the Local Court.

Yesterday he was due to be arraigned to stand trial in Lismore District Court.

Crown prosecutor Simon Apps asked Judge R McLoughlin to adjourn Doran's matters until October, which Mr Pratt supported.

"There are other matters that will be linked on that date," Mr Apps said.

Mr McLoughlin continued Doran's bail until his next appearance.
