Cavendish takes the lead at the Giro d'Italia

BRITAIN'S Mark Cavendish sprinted into the early lead of the Giro d'Italia after the Omega-Pharma rider won the 130km opening stage in Naples.

It was the 11th Giro stage win of Cavendish's career and his 98th victory overall. Aussie Matthew Goss (Green-Edge) was fifth overall heading into last night's second stage, a 17.4km team time trial from Ischia to Forio.

The race ends in Brescia on May 26.
