The first female Batman cartoonist visits Sugar City Con

AMERICAN-based cartoonist Becky Cloonan had the chance to get up close and personal with fans from around the region, eager to hear tell-tale stories of how to break into the cartooning industry.

Mackay's Sugar City Con grasped the chance to feature the talented drawer by pencilling in her visit last year.

Ms Cloonan said this trip was her first time down under.

She is the first female comic book artist to draw Batman on the Batman title.

"I think a show like Sugar City Con is great, because it's regional and small enough where you can just walk up to anyone and speak to them," she said. "I know the feeling of wanting to draw comics, but coming from a place where you don't think it's possible."

However, Ms Cloonan said the secret to breaking into the industry was practise.

"It doesn't matter how long, complex or what genre they are ... ownership is an important thing," she said.
