Car thief heads back to prison after 62nd conviction

HE already had 61 previous convictions for stealing cars, and had been to jail, but that did not stop Bradley James Coupe from taking another one.

The Caboolture 35-year-old was sent back to jail again yesterday after clocking up his 62nd unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard a car stolen from Nambour on September 4 last year was found at Coes Creek.

Coupe and a female initially blamed each other for driving it but his fingerprints were on it and he admitted moving it.

Coupe was on bail for stealing the car when he was caught driving while disqualified for the sixth time, in an unregistered and uninsured car at Caboolture on January 6 this year.

Lawyer John Gould told the court his client had taken to the road to search for a relative who had failed to front court.

The court heard Coupe initially failed to stop for police, and when he did, he ran and hid in a toilet block.

Coupe pleaded guilty yesterday to a total of seven charges, including driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, disqualified driving, failing to stop and obstructing police.

Magistrate Annette Hennessy noted his criminal record had been "fairly consistent" since the 1990s.

"Your history in relation to unlawful use of motor vehicles is the most serious I've seen in many years," she said.

She sentenced him to two years jail.

Coupe will also have to serve six months of a suspended sentence which he breached by committing his latest crimes.

He was also fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for periods of two and five years.

Coupe will be eligible for parole after serving a third of his sentence.
