Mother and children make lucky escape from car fire

UPDATE: A mother and two young children were lucky to escape a car fire at about 1.45pm west of Toowoomba, near Bowenville today.

Dalby police Senior Constable Sean Donaghy was at the scene of the fire and said a witness had called it in to the station.

"She was driving towards Toowoomba when the back driver's side wheel came off," he said.

"She pulled over to the side of the road and the heat caused the car to catch fire which engulfed it.

"The heat set the grass on fire. She got herself and the two kids out of the car...there were no injuries."

Both lanes of traffic were closed on the Warrego Hwy while emergency services worked to control the flames and clear the area.

The road has since been re-opened.

EARLIER: The Warrego Hwy is closed in both directions just west of Toowoomba due to a car fire.

The incident near Bowenville was reported about 1.45pm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews are on scene.

They have closed the highway as they work to extinguish the burning vehicle.

There are no reports of injuries at this stage.
