THE Rio Games will mark 120 years of Australians excelling at the Olympics.

Australia has won 483 Olympic medals - 142 gold, 159 silver, 182 bronze - in 25 Olympic disciplines.

Swimming has been the outstanding sport with 190 medals won in the pool (59 gold, 66 silver, 65 bronze).

With nine each, swimmers Ian Thorpe (with an Australian record five gold, three silver, one bronze) and Leisel Jones (three gold, five silver, and one bronze) have been the most successful individual Aussie Olympians.

Athletics is the next best sport with 71 (21 gold, 25 silver, 25 bronze) medals, followed by cycling (49), rowing (37) and sailing (23).

The USA has had more success than any other country, winning 976 gold medals, 758 silver and 666 bronze for in a total of 2400 medals.
