Bunnies Sutton hoping to secure his spot on Blues bench

NEW South Wales call-up John Sutton can't even remember the last time his home state won an Origin series.

"When was it? I think 2005 was my first full year in first grade. I don't really recall it," the man in line to take up Kurt Gidley's vacated utility jersey on the bench said yesterday.

While his own memory was hazy, the big Rabbitohs five-eighth said he had no doubt his parents would be able to remember the last Blues triumph.

"When I was young, my mum and dad used to love Origin. Mum jumped up and down when ET (Andrew Ettingshausen) made a break," he said.

"My parents would be really proud if I got the chance to run out there."

Representing the Blues would also be a massive honour for Sutton who is fighting for the bench spot with Canterbury playmaker Josh Reynolds.

"It's always been a dream. I don't think you ever give up hope of playing Origin one day," Sutton said.

"I'm one step closer, but I'm still not there yet. It's exciting times for me, I'm really happy with the way I've been playing."

Sutton said playing under Michael Maguire at Souths for the past two seasons had made him more consistent.

Meanwhile, Manly second-rower Glenn Stewart yesterday accepted his omission from the Blues' game one side, saying his knee was not up to scratch.

He did however say he would be 100% for game two and available if required.

Stewart's brother and incumbent Blues fullback Brett said he would return from a back injury in three weeks, giving him just one game to impress before Origin II on June 26.
