Ipswich's first micro-brewery will hold 200

IPSWICH'S first micro brewery and bar might not turn out to be as small as first thought.

The man behind the Pumpyard Bar and Brewery, Wade Curtis, recently decided to double the size of the construction area after realising the full potential of the idea.

Construction is under way on the adventurous project, which Mr Curtis first hinted at several years ago while brainstorming ways of getting his own 4 Hearts Brewing craft beers out in the market.

The 1200-litre brewery will be built in and around the bar, function room and lounge area - big enough to fit a total of about 200 patrons.

The bar will feature 20 taps, with seven of Mr Curtis's own varieties available, in addition to a couple of other craft beer options.

The fridges will be stocked with a wide variety of craft beer.

"At this stage we hope to be open before Christmas," Mr Curtis said.

"The brewery equipment will arrive in about four weeks and will be installed about mid-November.

"Soon after that I hope to start brewing here, so that there is some beer ready to go when it opens."

Away from the bar, the kitchen will also be a feature of the Pumpyard.

Mr Curtis has enlisted the help of executive chef Ali Orchard to come up with a menu that matches perfectly with the beers on tap.

Ms Orchard has some experience in marrying delicious meals with the amber fluid, having previously worked at Tippler's Tap and Tomahawk Bar in Brisbane.

The menu will make use of locally produced ingredients, including meat from JBS Swift at Dinmore and Schulte's Meat Tavern at Plainland.

Mr Curtis teamed up with 88 Limestone Street developer James Long to create the Pumpyard.

The bar and brewery will make up one part of what will be a full renewal of the 114-year-old former TAFE building.
