UPDATE: Young man 'testing out' bike at drag before killer collision at Benaraby

UPDATE: 8.41am: 

IT WAS a tragic end to a day out at the Benaraby drag races after a young man was declared dead at the scene of a traffic crash shortly after 7.30pm on Friday.

The 25-year-old was coming from the races after "testing out" his motorbike on the track when he collided with a utility on Jono Porter Dr.

A member of the CQ Drag Racing Association said the man was new to the track, and before leaving the venue was testing his bike to "see what it could do".

Spectators of the Off Street Meet held at the raceway weren't able to leave until the road was re-opened at 12.30am on Saturday. The Forensic Crash Unit was at the scene, and Gladstone police said an investigation was under way.


Police have confirmed the man who tragically died at the scene of the Benaraby car crash last night was 25-years-old.

While there is no new information as to the cause of the accident, initial investigations indicate a motorcycle and a utility collision on Jono Porter Drive.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating.

This fatal accident marks 135 deaths on Queensland roads this year, and the first fatal accident reported on Gladstone roads of 2016.


A MAN has died after being hit by car in Benaraby.

Queensland Ambulance Service said the man was riding a motorbike when it collided with a car.

QAS responded to the incident at 730pm and declared the man dead shortly after arriving on the scene.

The incident occurred on Jono Porter Dr and the road is now closed.

The road is expected to stay closed for some time as police forensic officers arrive on scene.

The Off Street Meet drag races are on tonight.
